Why is Birthing Biomechanics Important?

"I truly belive that we need to learn to support our bodies to birth in the best possible way. We need to support our anatomy and our physiology to do what it was designed to do."

SHELLIE POULTER - THE SERENITY DOULA

As a doula, I feel passionate about educating you and your family about the biomechanics of childbirth. It empowers you to make informed decisions about your birth preferences and labour management.

By understanding how you body works and how different positions and movements can impact your birthing process, you can actively participate in your care and advocate for interventions that support optimal bio mechanical function.

My antenatal sessions incorporate biomechanics principles and help prepare you for labor and equip you with knowledge and skills to navigate the birthing process with confidence and autonomy.

So what are the other benefits?

Facilitating Optimal Fetal Positioning:

  • Biomechanics research has highlighted the importance of maternal positioning in influencing the position of your baby during labour.
  • Certain positions, such as squatting, kneeling, or using a birthing ball, can help encourage optimal fetal positioning, reducing the likelihood of complications such as posterior or breech presentation.
  • By utilising biomechanical principles to support your natural alignment and movement, I can guide you during labour and help facilitate an easier and more efficient labour process.

Enhancing Pelvic Mobility and Alignment:

  • Biomechanical assessments of pelvic mobility and alignment can provide valuable insights into your own  ability to accommodate the birthing process.
  • Techniques such as pelvic floor exercises, stretching, and manual therapy can help improve pelvic flexibility and alignment, reducing the risk of pelvic dysfunction and birth complications.
  • By addressing biomechanical imbalances and restrictions early in pregnancy, I can show you how to optimise your  pelvic biomechanics for a smoother labour and delivery experience.

Promoting Physiological Birth:

Interventions that respect the biomechanical integrity of the maternal pelvis and birth canal, such as avoiding unnecessary medical interventions and allowing freedom of movement during labour, can help promote a more positive birth experience (staying active and off the bed will help you more than you may realise!).

  • Biomechanics emphasises the importance of supporting your body's natural physiological processes during childbirth.
